Alkaline Phosphatase is an enzyme made primarily
by the liver, intestines and bones. It’s intended function
is to help those organs do their job. Normal levels are
usually less than 120, but can be slightly different depending
on the lab. When
it’s elevated it may indicate illness related to those
organs ( i.e.. Gallstones, Hepatitis, Alcohol, Medications, or
bone injury among many other possibilities).
If
your alkaline phosphatase is elevated your doctor will do
additional blood tests to try and determine which organ might
be producing the high levels. Further evaluation will then be
directed toward finding out if anything is wrong with that
organ.
