Medications which can raise liver enzymes

 

Below is a partial list of some commonly used medications which can cause liver enzyme elevations. This list is by no means complete. Always consult the manufacturers information and never stop any prescribed medication without consulting with your doctor first.

  • Pain relief medications

aspirin( Bayer< Excedrin etc.), acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), neproxen (Alleve,Naprosyn), diclofenac (Voltaren), and phenybutazone (Butazolidine)

  • Anti-seizure medications

 phenytoin (Dilantin), valproic acid, carbamazepine (Tegretol), and phenobarbital

  • Antibiotics

tetracycline,doxycycline, sulfonamides, isoniazid (INH), sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, nitrofurantoin, etc.

  • Cholesterol lowering drugs

 "statins" (Mevacor, Pravachol, Lipitor, etc.) and niacin

  • Cardiovascular drugs

 amiodarone (Cordarone), hydralazine, quinidine, etc.

  • Anti-depressant drugs
